Week 10 Vocabulary – Short Definitions

Story: The Story of the Statue of Liberty

 1) liberty (n): the condition of those who are free and independent 

2) unveil (v): to remove a veil or covering from

3) crown (n): a wreath, band, or circular ornament for the head

4) torch (n): a burning stick of resinous wood or twist of tow used to give light and usually carried in the hand

5) tablet (n): a flat slab or plaque suited for or bearing an inscription

6) model (n): a usually miniature representation of something

7) symbol (n): something that stands for or suggests something else by reason of relationship, association, convention, or accidental resemblance

8) unforgettable (adj): incapable of being forgotten

9) breathless (adj): panting or gasping for breath

10) safely (adj): free from harm or risk

11) moment (n): a comparatively brief period of time

12) statue (n): a three-dimensional representation usually of a person, animal, or mythical being that is produced by sculpturing, modeling, or casting

13) represent (v): to serve as a sign or symbol of

14) island (n): a tract of land surrounded by water and smaller than a continent

25) construct (v): to make or form by combining or arranging parts or elements
